Different Types of Separators

An oil and gas separator, also known as a production separator, is a large vessel used in the oil and gas industry to separate gas from oil and other liquids. The gas is oftentimes vented in the environment, while the oil or various other liquids are processed and/or transported.

The oil and gas separation system, such as the ones at tiger safety rentals, is based upon gravity. The more heavy oil and liquids drop to the bottom level of the separator , while the lighter gas goes up for the top. The gas is often processed or transported in pipelines, while the oil and other fluids are kept in tanks or moved by truck or rail.

Oil and gas separators are used in a number of various uses, including natural gas processing plants, offshore manufacturing facilities, and offshore production platforms. They range in size from small units which can process a couple of barrels of oil per day to large units which can process one or two thousand barrels of oil per day. The primary parts of an oil and gas separator are the separator vessel, the separation deck, and the gas handling system. The separator, or container, is a big steel container for storing the oil and liquids. The separation deck consists of a series of perforated plates that allow the fluids to flow to the surface area as the gas bubbles rise on the surface area. The gas handling method is made up of a number of pipes and valves that enable the gas to be moved & / or processed.

Different Types of Separators

Separators of various Types are used in the chemical engineering as well as petroleum industries. Stage Separators and expansion Separators are two Types of equipment used-to separate fluids into their component parts. The expansion separators and the stage separators are made to work together to give the most effective separation.

Stage Separators

Stage Separators are generally cylindrical in shape and are utilized to set apart fluids of different densities. The stage separator’s top part is loaded with a less dense material , while its lower part is filled with a more dense fluid. The fluids are allowed to run through the stage separator under the force of gravity, thus the lighter fluid is forced to the top as the heavier fluid is forced to the bottom.

Expansion Separators

Expansion separators are typically used to separate fluids that are of different temperatures. The expansion separator’s upper part is filled with a hotter fluid while the lower part is filled with a cooler fluid. The fluids are allowed to run through the expansion separator under the influence of gravity, and the hotter fluid will be forced to the top as the cooler solution will be forced on the bottom.

Wrapping Up

An oil and gas separator would be a device utilized in the oil and gas industry to separate oil and gas molecules from any other pieces in a liquid or gas mixture.
